About
Stephen Wells, who started CollegeConsult in 2012, is schooled in the intricacies of the college selection and application process, as well as the financial aid labyrinth, and has helped numerous students and parents over the past several years in these challenging and time-consuming areas, making the process less daunting for them.
Steve is a professional writer with a New York Times and television industry background. He taught writing for 9 years at Drew University in New Jersey, and is a member of the Writers Guild of America and the New Jersey Association for College Admission Counseling.
Most high school guidance departments unfortunately aren't able to shepherd students through the process of college application essay writing. Steve's experience as a writer with editing and structural skills makes him uniquely qualified to assist students in this vital area, which is often the only opportunity they have to "personalize" their applications.
In addition to his professional experience, he has a personal understanding of the pressures and demands that today's students face, as well as a cultivated sense of what today's teachers, tests, and admissions deans are looking for, and how best to present it.
Steve resides in Bergen County, New Jersey, with his wife, attorney Tracy Young. They have two sons, one of whom last year received his Masters degree from the Paris School of International Affairs (SciencesPo) and is currently Program Coordinator for the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University, and the other of whom earned his B.A. from Steve's alma mater, the University of Virginia, in 2019, and is pursuing a music industry career, currently working with the venerable performance venue SOB's in New York City.
Member, New Jersey Association for College Admission Counseling (NJACAC)
